First Seedlings of theYear

We got another email from Tera! Exciting news because she has another WWOOFer at the farm right now who's helping her get things started. This WWOOFer, Carley, got there about a week ago and Tera said they've been having a great time. They will get the first seedlings of the season started so that when we get there, we can jump right in. When the farm was running to full capacity, they would start seedlings right after christmas, to get a head start and make the earliest dent in the market that they could. What is also exciting is that Tera said a lot of the seedlings end up getting composted, so Dave and I will be able to send home presents to all our gardening friends.

What's so exciting for me is that growing is going to be our jobs! Meaning, no challenge will be too hard. I've been wanting to grown lavender for a long time now, but the germination period is so long it makes this task very difficult. But this Tera's help and the professional equipment we'll have access to, I'll be able to grow lavender all around the yurt.

Its nerve-wracking that we only have about 5 weeks to go and our apartment is still mess. Next week we're having a psuedo-estate sale, but its really just our friends coming over and taking what they want out of the stuff we can't take. We bought 4 18-gallon bins and our going to limit ourselves to these bins for personal items that we're bringing. I already filled one with my sewing machine and various craft stuff. The good things is that clothes, books and records are not included in this. We're trying to find a trailer to tow our things in, but they're expensive! We're looking for something in the $100-$200 range and they're out there, just hard to find. If anyone sees one, let us know!!!

Until then, peace and love, and I leave you with this

Morning Sun Organics

Back in September of 2007, Dave and I joined an organization called World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. After our first year running the Root Project, though successful, we realized that there is still so much about farming that we don't know. What do you plant in place of spinach after it sucks all the iron out of the soil? Farms across the country who are looking for volunteers list in a WWOOF directory and offer room and board to people seeking education and experience. In exchange for 10-30 hours of work per week, volunteers get warm food, a warm place to sleep and a season's experience working on an organic farm. This was our intention...to spend a season on a farm, learning the ins-and-outs, and use that knowledge for whatever came next. But what ended up happening was that we found:

Morning Sun Organics is run by a woman named Tera in Drain, Oregon. She starts seedlings in three big greenhouses and sells these seedlings to nurseries and at farmer's markets. A couple years ago the farm was run by Tera and three others, but now it is her alone. After we found Tera through WOOF in November, we've sent emails back and forth, had a couple phone calls and got to know each other. She has sent pictures of the farm and we have sent pictures of ourselves, our family and our life here. Below are a couple pictures from the farm. Here are more.

We'll be living on the farm with Tera in a yurt. Its 20 feet in diameter, with a little over 300 square feet. Inside, there's a wood stove, queen bed, couch, bookcase, end table, kitchen table and 6x8 rug (which nothing else is touching! roomy.) The bubble up top is the skylight!

The weather in Drain is beautiful....75 in July and 40 in January. Its a rainy place but hardly any snow.

On top of the business, we'll be growing our own food, preserving for the winter and selling surplus at the farmer's market in Eugene. Its the life we were meant to live!!!

Until next time, peace and love,
